CLAY

World's First Clayntings

What is Claynting?

Claynting is the application of colored clay to transparent surfaces.

Alaina Bryan (She/They) spearheaded the technique in 2019, when, inspired by polymer clay artists on instagram, they created the first claynting using an XL Mason Jar.

Alaina has made it her goal to explore as many classic art styles as possible using claynting, so far including abstract, religious iconography, mandalas, portraiture, and most recently, landscape.

She particularly enjoy creating pieces that come to life when exposed to UV light- she made several works using florescent clay before even purchasing her first blacklight. Now she uses florescence intentionally to give every piece a glowing nocturnal alter ego.

However, this isn't the only way clayntings have been known to glow- Alaina discovered that when placed with the back exposed to a sunny window, clayntings become illuminated with sunlight, much like stained glass.

These features make Alaina's clay works unique, engaging and versitile!

FAQ's

  • how do you secure the clay to the glass?

the clay I use, polymer modeling clay, naturally sticks to the glass without any kind of adhesive.

  • how do you color the clay?

I use clay that comes pre-colored, although I often combine colors, and mix in additional pigments or glitter, for added effect.

  • how do you cure the clay?

the clay I use cannot be cured by conventional means- it would melt in the oven. however, like oil paint, it dries out over long periods of time, or it can be protected with a clear laquer coating.
